About Victoria Sheridan

Biography

Victoria has a Masters in Art History from the University of California at Davis and a Masters in Humanities from Dominican University of California in San Rafael.  She completed extensive post graduate research in the field of Venetian Baroque art and architecture.

Her career as a photojournalist began in 1989 at a small town weekly newspaper and she continues to practice documentary and editorial photography as a freelance photographer today.  Victoria works primarily in the photo documentary tradition and her work has appeared in many Bay Area newspapers, international publications, museums and art galleries.  She works with traditional black and white film, color, and digital capture.  She has been teaching the History of Photography at Dominican University since 2004 and has taught a wide variety of Art History for over ten years.  Her research and photographs have been presented at conferences and symposiums around the world.

Victoria is available for assignment photography work, teaching, workshops, and speaking engagements.  The use of her photographs is only permitted through licensing agreements.

Artist's Statement

Posted to the wall above my desk is a quote that I frequently study.  It reads, “Your career as a photographer is a marathon.  It is not a sprint.”  The advice came from Tom Kennedy, the well-known former Director of Photography of National Geographic.  His words eloquently describe my journey as a photographer.  In this marathon of creative expression I started out years ago fresh and high spirited, at times I felt winded, exhausted, and stopped along the way for a much needed respite, yet I have always been willing to continue and engage in this wonderful practice of image making.

My journey as a photographer has continued throughout my life at various paces with different levels of achievements as well as failures.

I have always been interested in the human condition and our circumstances.  I endeavor to portray our world, as I see and experience it, in my photography.  With my photographs I attempt to provide a picture of who we are, why we live the way we do, the choices we have made, where we live, how we work and play, and how we engage with each other and the world around us.

As I continue along my journey, both of life and photography, the lessons of past failures and hopes of success are my marathon companions.

I have put together several galleries of images on this website as well as an archive of images available for licensing.  From documenting the U.S.S.R. in 1989 to my travels around the United States photographing major league baseball parks and my current daily assignment work as well as documenting life in the California Delta Region.  I hope you enjoy the images and visit again to view my new work and projects in progress.
