Day 28: self isolation/covid 19/2020. Working in our garden has become a great escape from the current trauma of our world. I leave my phone in the house and immerse myself in yard chores. Working the soil, hoeing, tilling, and shoveling to prepare for our plantings. To the sound of Greg’s saw as he worked on our gate, with my feral cats wandering through the new pathways and rolling in the dusty gravel, weed covered areas gave way to the blades as I worked to clear an area. Buckets of dead leaves tossed into the slowly decaying compost pile and a newly discovered secret sleeping spot underneath my overgrown rosemary bush where Beethoven the feral tabby cat sleeps. A simple dinner of greens, roasted red beets, and red beans as another day of pandemic life is checked off the calendar.
