The Bureau of Reclamation opened the Delta Cross Channel Gates on Friday, June 10, 2016 to allow reacrational boating throughout the weekend. The gates were closed on Monday, June 13, 2016. The Delta Cross Channel Gates control the diversion channel near Walnut Grove which is about 30 miles south of Sacramento, California. When the gates are open it allows for fresh water to be drawn from the Sacramento River into the interior of the Sacramento/SanJoaquin Delta, through Snodgrass Slough, as well as the Mokelumne River. When the gates are open boat traffic is allowed to pass through and when the gates are closed this prevents juvenile salmon from being diverted from their migratory route along the Sacramento River and into the interior Delta.
